4TH OF 4TH
vanessa has tagged juliet and me for the "fourth of fourth" blog assignment.
the idea is that you go into the fourth folder
of your photo files and pick the fourth photo from that folder.
and so it goes that this is the fourth photo of my fourth folder:
ironic because it is actually a screen capture from
agnes varda’s short film, du côté de la côte (1958),
that i shot off of our television for a post on this very blog
which, again, is ironic because vanessa, kindly,
was the sole commenter for that post -which was a somewhat personal view on happiness.
thank you, miss rose eater!
now to continue on with this investigation,
i tag:
the happy cali & jenna from teenage teardrops,
the lovely and delightful, kira of flame like me,
the good listener - joanne from hello its me
and who does not like cake of now voyager!

FALL EPHEMERIDES
26 october 1927. wednesday, paris
in the tournoi championnat du paris (15.10.1927)
duchamp plays one of his opponents at 90 rue de mathurins,
and roché comes to watch.
26 october 1947. sunday, new york city
after finishing his chess game with kiesler at one in the morning,
marcel returns to dine at 56 seventh avenue.
26 october 1950. thursday, paris
at four o’clock in the afternoon, roché calls at 14 rue halle.
with denise’s help, marcel has made a list (of mary reynold’s library?)
and he invites roche to choose some books not included in those
to be transported to chicago.
in the evening they meet jean suquet (25.12.1949) for dinner
at mouton-duvernet. while entertaining suquet,
duchamp treats himself to a dish of frog’s legs in spite of roché pulling faces.

SCOPITONE A-307
we just watched elevator to the gallows (ascenseur pour l'échafaud) .
i was struck again by how great a film it is. i had seen it a while ago and forgot how well written and shot it is. louis malle has done such amazing work and i don't know that much about him. keep a watch on our film log because i feel as though i may be going through several of his films in the coming weeks. thankfully he is a criterion favorite and there is a wealth of his films available.
oh and jeanne moreau...well jeanne moreau.
thanks to jeanleto for uploading this scopitone from 1966!

ON AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS
is dolly parton beyond reproach?
the question transcends taste in music or threshold for schmaltz. it goes beyond whether you own any of her albums, have seen any of her movies, or would ever dare to dress how she dresses or look how she looks. dolly has trounced most reasonable criticism through a forceful combination of talent, sincerity, and, above all, a good sense of humor in the face of herself. measure "jolene" against the "9 to 5" musical, or dollywood against "straight talk." even the starkest assessments leave dolly in the positive. is this woman unassailable?
ON THE POINT
WEEKEND ROAD TRIP
ah, the biggest little city in the world. if what happens in vegas stays in vegas, then what happens to what happens in reno? we'll be back in a few days with the answer. my guess is that "it follows us home."
in the meantime, i answered some fun questions at no good for me for a new feature they've started called "love yr blog." i am honored! read me gush about frederick wiseman, andrew bird, and baby elephants here.
thank you, liz, kat, and laura!
ON UNEXPLORED TENSIONS (NEUROTIC)
you're standing around with your friends, and something silly comes on the radio. so you start to silly dance. your friends encourage you with giggles. the understanding is that you're all laughing together, tickled by the same ironic, unmerited enthusiasm, but wait--are they also laughing at you? how different is your silly dancing from your actual dancing? i would venture to guess that the moves are perilously similar. before you know it, you're sort of actually dancing, and you won't remember when you crossed the line.
i can think of only one, maybe two people in my life who dance in earnest no matter what the circumstance, and the pivotal differences between me and them seem to be facial expression and movement of the arms. i've given this a lot of thought. dancing is difficult for shy people, you know.

ON THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME
billie holiday sings travelin' light. this footage is so candid that it seems to have been caught by accident. the dark shake of her earring fascinates me.
ON THE BUS (DELIGHT)
having caught the wrong line, i had to get off the bus at fairfax and walk the mile or so home in the dark. i passed the lights at lacma and peeked in on the richard serra sculptures from outside the museum windows. a man walked a big, shaggy dog to my left. there's construction on the walking route to my bus, and the makeshift sidewalk they've created is an improvement on the original. i wish they'd keep it. short winter days make night feel like night again.
ON THE BUS (CYNICISM)
i rode by two movie premieres on the bus home tonight. one benefit of living in los angeles is the demystification of things like these. a small, listless crowd on a dark street in front of a small building, with a few lights and camera flashes here and there. in person, the red carpet just looks sad and self-congratulatory. especially considering how awful most movies are.
