whenever i hear the word "necessity," i think of this screen test. it was made by josef von sternberg just before ms. dietrich starred in one of my favorite films, "the blue angel." it was long thought to be lost in world war II, and marlene herself never saw it.
"you're the cream in my coffee
you're the salt in my stew
you will always be my necessity,
i am lost without you."

oh good. my boyfriend & I are celebrating our 5yr anniversary in two weeks. now I know what to write in my card to him!!
marlene seems a bit stressed out...I love how at one moment she is this overtly happy entertainer and at the next moment her loveliness combusts and it looks like she might slaughter the poor piano player. was she acting?
so good.
