RAIN LIGHT SOUND
ON APPROPRIATE RESPONSES

still from found film flashes, 1973
attended an la filmforum screening of work by coleen fitzgibbon, an experimental filmmaker working since the 1970's. have you heard of her?
i hadn't before last night.
still from internal systems, 1975
they showed four of her early films. the headiest of the bunch: internal systems, which consists entirely of a blank screen shifting gradually from light to dark, dark to light. it runs 45 minutes. i found myself absorbed in other thoughts, unrelated to the image; next to me i heard a man's breathing grow regular; he had fallen asleep. appropriate responses both.
a perfect end to a great sunday. counterpoint to the subtlety of internal systems:
kimono my house, sparks, 1974, finally secured at amoeba yesterday. this album is 34 years old! sparks will be playing this and another album in their entirety at royce hall, february 14, 2009. will rhan and juliet spend their valentine's with sparks? there's a heavy lean towards yes.
ERASING ALL EMOTION

plazaville is a new video art work based on godard's alphaville.
it is set in 21st century new york city. scenes from the original alphaville are being re-enacted by artists, actors and videographers, members of the artist collaborative, artist meeting, in collaboration with g. h. hovagimyan and christina mcphee.
the group shoots these episodes on the fly, without permits or permission and
uses the internet as a means of distributing the deconstructed narrative in short episodes. it's like a serialized program but is not in any order. it will be presented as a video installation work when it is completed.
you can watch the current scenes of plazaville (via a computer) at:
g. h. hovagimyan's youtube channel
the artist meeting website
or by logging onto the itunes store and search for plazaville.

LIFE ADVERTISEMENTS

the ubiquitous, modern advertisement. big sans-serif on a big picture.
applied to banalities from my photo album:
very common problem, no-nonsense solution.
this is poignant and might actually move some ties. or cats.

BAR SOUS LE TOIT

these days i am trying to grab hold of those things that
mean something to me. i try and relate. it is though i am looking
for symbols. and signs. touchstones and seconds of light.
charlotte perriand
marched up to le corbusier and handed him her business card.
he looked at her drawings and famously said,
"we don't embroider cushions here."
later she had the confidence to invite him to see her installation
at the salon d’autumne.
he hired her.
she designed the b306 chaise lounge. she was photographed reclining in this chaise. it is a very mysterious photo. i assume that the photo was for an advertisement, but it is unforgettable due to the effect of her recline, her clothes, the shadows and her face turned towards the wall. it speaks volumes of ...something.

AND IT'S WORKING

WATER IN MILK EXISTS (2008) by lawrence weiner (!) 22:52 min.
"in cooperation with the swiss institute, lawrence weiner teamed up with cinematographer kiki allgeier to realize WATER IN MILK EXISTS, a fresh skin flick that challenges both artistic and pornographic conventions. the film contains quotations from the artist's children books, austere dialogues on string theory, animations, as well as a lot of carnal action. a multitude of events accompany the launch of the film, mingling porn and art as two of today's most lucrative industries." (from ubuweb)
watch the whole thing here. fascinating. nsfw.
SEVEN THINGS

(1) i was born in los angeles, california, lived in glendale until the fifth grade, and attended schools in arizona until i was 23. i'm back in los angeles as an adult and wondering if i might attend schools here, too.
(2) when i was younger i would practice splitting a deck of cards exactly in half by feel. i got pretty good at it. it's not that hard.
(3) every time i see the word "misled," i read it to myself at first as miss-eld and wonder what that word means. and then i think, oh, that's right. misled.
(4) i very rarely get headaches and have never had a migraine. jinx?
(5) i was on the varsity badminton team in high school. it was the one time in my life where i was demonstrably, aggressively competitive.
(6) my goal is to be thoroughly film-educated by the time i'm 35. i'm not sure how i define "thoroughly film-educated," but i think i'll know when i get there.
(7) i really, really love to sleep. pillows! sheets! blankets!

FIRST THINGS FIRST
we are, like so many others, overjoyed, relieved, optimistic. though today was bittersweet: what happened, california? it's enough to shock the heart.
nevertheless...yes, yes, yes. this country has a new face. it's about time.
ON SUCCULENCE
i bought a small succulent for the apartment last month, and it gives me far more pleasure to look at than it cost me in dollars. my response to our financial woes is to draw my resources indoors. i want to beautify our home and make it a factory haven, a productive, inspiring, working space where we can make things instead of buy them. now is the time to spend my evenings reading, educating myself in film, or improving my skills in piano and french. there are pleasures that are cheap or free, and i intend to find them. let the world come to us.
PS: EVERYBODY VOTE TOMORROW.
